About the Opportunity

We are seeking a Breeding Nursery Assistant with hands-on experience and a solid understanding of nursery operations developed through job-related training and substantial on-the-job experience. This role supports daily nursery functions and may serve as an informal resource for less experienced team members.

Responsibilities

Through weekly meetings with Breeding nursery as well as with the breeding nursery assistant, this role will gather information about the activities and labor needed to be done in the glasshouse, propose a plan to ensure the correct achievement of the different goals for each crop and make a forecast of people and materials needed. This role will also coordinate and supervise the labor done by crew to execute the plans, as well as activities done by third party companies working in the maintenance and/or improvement of the glasshouse.

Tasks and activities

  • Check daily the development of the plants in the different crops, advice about lack of water, lack of fertilization to the plant and any disease symptoms that appeared. Daily check on the irrigation system.
  • Determine the number of workers to be planned in each moment, based activities to be done.
  • Transmit orders to the crew for the different labor and supervise the work is being done correctly. As Breeding Nursery, working with a lot of different selections is implied. There are delicate moments like planting, transplanting, harvesting where presence is required to supervise, avoid mix-up and ensure correct traceability.
  • Evaluate the performance of the staff contracted and informs the Breeding Nursery Lead of any issues.
  • Identification of any malfunctions or problems in the glasshouse, trayfields and longcane fields, to be reported to the grower on location. Identify if problems can be solved internally or if external companies need to be involved.
  • Growing items supply (substrates, trays, pots…). Management of inventory and place the orders for materials with DPlant when needed. Check deliveries when they arrive and allocate them properly in the warehouse/storage/glasshouse.
  • Maintain a given annual budget for key items like workforce, pots, substrate and plant production.
  • Advice Breeding Nursery Lead for improvements in the glasshouse that can have impact on the performance of the current or future activities.
  • Contribute with any new ideas which can help to reach an operational excellence in the Breeding Nursery, by achieving an optimal optimization of the facilities and improving the quality of plants.
  • Arrange correct loading and unloading of trucks, related to Breeding Nursery orders.  Transport related, is loading and unloading of the truck.
  • Cold storage: Quality check of the plants during cold storage and make sure no problems appear during this period.
  • Build relations with DPlant to ensure a good relation between companies.
  • Attend any relevant event or nurseries that can help to look for inspiration.

Impact of position

This position will provide support to the Breeding Nursery in the Netherlands, to succeed in production of correct and good quality plant material for trials, that are delivered on the requested date to the different stake holders.

Management tasks

Supervision of the workers during task performance at the Breeding Nursery, implications to be shared with Breeding Nursery Lead and DPlant.

Projects

This profile requires a proactive person who can suggest and execute improvements in the facilities as well as management of the crops.

Candidate Profile

  • Education & training

Minimum secondary vocational education (MBO), or equivalent of technician. Background of agriculture desirable.

  • Experience

Candidate needs at least a minimum of one-year work experience in agricultural production sector. Work experience related to nursery in Strawberry and cane fruit not essential, but very favorable.
