About the Opportunity

Global R&D drives significant value for Driscoll’s Enterprise operating breeding programs and research centers across the globe. Positioned within Global R&D, the Sensory Lab uses sensory and consumer science to study consumer preferences and the value they place on various berry attributes. The Sensory Lab employees are an interdisciplinary team that connects with a broad range of audiences to help quantify the competitiveness of Driscoll’s genetics versus berries from other breeding programs or brands. The role of the Sensory Research Scientist is to design, interpret, and report experiments related to consumers and trained panels. The Sensory Research Scientist will be required to manage and mentor the sensory lab coordinator.

Responsibilities

•    Recruit, train, calibrate, and maintain a descriptive panel 
•    Collaborate globally with breeders, Quality Assurance, marketing, product leaders, and other departments to design experiments that provides actionable insights
•    Interpret data independently while also relying on stakeholders for inputs to maximize the value generated from experiments.
•    Tell the story with data by piecing together multiple disciplines outside of sensory during read-out and project debriefs
•    Manage and mentor the sensory lab coordinator to ensure successful lab operations and execution of procedures
•    Ability to customize experiments using innovative and novel methods based on stakeholder requirements
•    Ability to analyze qualitative and quantitative sensory experiments using conventional and novel up-to-date technology and methods
•    Ability to provide interactive sensory tours for visitors
•    Other duties as needed

Candidate Profile

Requirements

•    PhD with emphasis on Consumer and Sensory Science or Masters in related field with experience 
•    2 – 5 years in sensory and consumer science 
•    2+ years in leading a descriptive panel 
•    2+ years in consumer science
•    4+ years in experimental design
•    Descriptive panel training and analysis of related data
•    Sensory and consumer experimental design using interdisciplinary approach
•    Collaborating with stakeholders across multiple functions and business units
•    Advanced descriptive panel moderator
•    Advanced statistical analysis and interpretation
•    Advanced data visualization and storytelling with data
•    Intermediate people management skills

Preferred Qualifications
•    Advanced Spanish, written and verbal
•    2+ years in product development
•    Track record of providing sensory support through an entire product life cycle 
•    Shows initiative as an independent and team contributor; ability to work effectively with cross-functional groups and maintain strong working relationships
•    Ability to lift 40 pounds
•    Ability to travel (5% minimum travel)
•    Ability to travel internationally without restrictions (valid passport required)
•    Ability to obtain California Driver’s license and be covered under company-sponsored vehicle insurance program

Compensation & Benefits:

The following information is provided in good faith as a general description of the salary range and benefits for the position posted.  The actual compensation offered to the successful candidate is dependent upon experience, skills, education, work location, internal pay equity, and other objective job-related factors.

Salary Range estimated for the Sensory Research Scientist: $91,700 to $110,000 USD.
