About the Opportunity

We are looking for an intern who is excited to join our Postharvest R&D team that researches fruit quality and shelf-life in berries. The intern will work within the postharvest department to advance the core purpose of Driscoll’s postharvest needs focused on delighting our consumers. The primary focus of the internship will be on development, testing and optimization of novel methods for characterizing the postharvest components of berries. The person will accomplish success by collaborating on innovative projects developed with assistance from other team members. The intern will also support the current projects that aligns with company needs and intern’s interests.


•    Assist with optimization of analytical, biochemical, and imaging methods to measure berry fruit quality components.
•    Perform postharvest shelf-life and quality evaluations on berries. 
•    Operate analytical laboratory equipment.
•    Collect, enter, and analyze fruit quality data.
•    Maintains measurement and testing equipment in operational condition.
•    Maintains a safe and orderly work environment.
•    Communicates effectively with coworkers from different Driscoll’s departments including post-harvest, breeding, sensory and next gen breeding groups.
•    Ensures protection of Driscoll’s confidential and proprietary information and materials.
•    Represents Driscoll’s in an ethical and business-like manner in all interactions with co-workers, suppliers, customers, and the business community at large.
•    Other duties as assigned.

Candidate Profile

•    Be currently enrolled as an advanced undergraduate in plant biology, horticulture, biochemistry, or agriculture related field.
•    Understand the scientific methods including setting up lab experiments and testing a hypothesis.
•    Ability to work in both a research lab and outdoor field environment.
•    Excellent communication skills and ability to work with cross-functional research teams.
•    Great data collection, data analysis and interpretation skills. 
•    Be reliable, honest, and trustworthy.
•    Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
•    Precision in lab record/data keeping.

Preferred Qualifications & Leadership Competencies
•    Enrollment in MS preferred.
•    Prior experience with data analysis.
•    Experience with lab analytical, molecular, and biochemical tools.
•    Experience with image processing software like ImageJ.
•    Proficient in Microsoft Excel/Word/PowerPoint.
•    Plans & Aligns: Establishes priorities and desired outcomes and creates plans to achieve them.
•    Drives Results: Pursues everything with energy, resourcefulness, and the need to achieve desired outcomes.
•    Collaborates: Works with a variety of colleagues, inside and/or outside of Driscoll’s, seeking win-win solutions.
•    California driver’s license and the ability to be covered under company-sponsored vehicle insurance program. 


The following information is provided in good faith as a general description of the salary range and benefits for the position posted.  The actual compensation offered to the successful candidate is dependent upon experience, skills, education, work location, internal pay equity, and other objective job-related factors. 

The hourly range estimated for this internship is:  Junior to recent grad (Bachelor's level within 6 months of graduation): $18-$22/Master to PhD: $26-$40
