About the Opportunity

This internship offers a student studying data science, plant breeding, plant physiology, or quantitative genetics the unique opportunity to explore working with a highly collaborative agricultural research and development group focused on breeding berries. The intern will work most closely with Driscoll’s Next Generation Breeding team, Plant Physiology team and Plant Breeding team with exposure to scientists working in field, lab, and leadership roles. The intern will be responsible for the development of an integrated crop growth model and whole genome prediction (CGM-WGP) model for prediction to an untested environment. As part of the process of developing this tool, the intern will assist in data collection, leverage historical data and analyze data to develop a crop model that can be used for genomic prediction. The intern will have the opportunity to participate in general day-to-day breeding activities during peak season, including but not limited to, seedling selection, fruit evaluation, and phenotyping (field time will be adjusted according to the intern’s interests). At the end of the internship, they will present the data and conclusion of their main projects in a report and will give an oral presentation to discuss their findings. This internship is from May – August with flexibility.

Responsibilities

Work with the NGB team to understand the needs of the CGM-WGP tool
Work with Plant Breeding and Plant Physiology Team to understand the available historical data 
Develop a crop growth model
Develop an integrated crop growth model and whole genome prediction (CGM-WGP) model
Share findings through detailed documentation and summarized reports

Candidate Profile

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s or Graduate program in Data Science, Plant Breeding, Plant Physiology or Quantitative Genetics
  • Strong R, Python or other programming languages
  • Have taken coursework in plant breeding, plant physiology; biology- and genetics-related courses a plus
  • Experience in plant breeding and/or plant physiology is preferred 
  • Ability to build components of an overall workflow
  • Understand the scientific method
  • Be attentive to details 
  • Be able to work in office, lab, and outdoor field environments (lab and outdoor components) Option to work remotely part of the week.
  • Have great communication skills
  • Be reliable, honest, and trustworthy
  • Driver’s license, transportation, and the ability to be covered under a company-sponsored vehicle insurance program

Compensation

The following information is provided in good faith as a general description of the salary range and benefits for the position posted.  The actual compensation offered to the successful candidate is dependent upon experience, skills, education, work location, internal pay equity, and other objective job-related factors. 

The hourly range estimated for this internship is: Freshman to recent grad (Bachelor's level within 6 months of graduation): $18-$22/Master to PhD: $26-$40
