About the Opportunity

The Genetic Deployment Manager leads Project Management efforts to promote the most effective and efficient deployment of new varieties globally, for a specific Business Unit, keeping the objectives of our company mission as the primary driver in determining optimal outcomes.  This role is a critical liaison between the traditional breeding programs and global plant health group with related scientific elements such as molecular, genomic, physiology, test plot farming, etc. and the four geographic business units with their respective strategic and operating business plans.  In this role, a working knowledge of each production region’s supply priorities, is in turn aggregated to form an understanding of the strengths and weaknesses across each continent.  In addition, a comprehensive understanding of the competitors, particularly the competitor breeding programs, is developed and maintained so that the competitive landscape is well understood versus the Driscoll’s breeding pipeline.  These gathered insights in turn support and inform the breeding program, as well as the geographic business units, for optimal competitiveness in each region. 

Responsibilities

  • Project management of 'Win with Flavor' efforts such as delight curves, metrics, communication and marketing of new varieties to the organization.
  • Form highly aligned partnerships with the global breeding teams, and thoroughly understand the profile of existing varieties and upcoming pipeline selections and partnerships other departments directly related to berry crops scientific development efforts, and Driscoll's of the Americas (DOTA) geographic business unit’s product leadership and production teams.
  • Provide initiative necessary to profile all regional supply plans, with associated strengths and weaknesses, and competitive variety positioning. 
  • Roll up by business unit and overlay with the related strategic and operational plans for competitive assessment, and forward-looking needs analysis.  Further roll up for global visioning and needs analysis, over multiple time horizons, developed in conjunction with the Breeding and Product Leadership teams and is imbedded into new variety & research launch plans.
  • Lead R&D connection with Business Unit through quarterly reviews, prioritizing annual activities expressed through Plan on a Page, and maintaining participation in relative initiatives and workstreams spanning the Nursery, Applied Research, Agronomy, Accounting and Sales.
  • Develop compelling representations of the berry genetic pipeline, including competitive positioning, related program velocities, commercial impact forecasts, and fast track prioritizations.
  • Collect and aggregate commercially related learnings from key stakeholders, including customers and growers, to better inform the breeding program.
  • Support the Global Breeders and their teams with activities related to intellectual property (IP) filing processes.  Lead efforts to understand tradeoffs associated with country filings, and whether to pursue IP protection, in relation to the forecasted commercial potential.
  • Assist in the development and structuring of variety lifecycle management, aimed at improving specific competitive positioning objectives.  Identify, profile, and quantify related risks and risk mitigation steps.
  • Effectively communicate global learnings, and status of high value selections so that BU decisions can be made in a timely manner to maximize deployment speed or minimize risk.
  • Develop and track key scorecard metrics associated with genetic deployment.  Communicate metrics results with key stakeholders.
  • Promote optimal handoffs to the business units and their respective production regions, including on farm trial success, for highly effective genetic deployment.
  • Follow Company policies and practices while representing Driscoll’s in an ethical and business-like manner in all interactions with employees, Growers, Customers, Suppliers, governmental agencies, etc.

Candidate Profile

  • Five plus years of project management or other related experience, direct experience in agriculture industry a plus.
  • B.S. or B.A. degree in a technical, business or operations management discipline.  An advanced degree (M.S. or MBA) and/or relevant professional certification is highly preferred.
  • Bilingual (English / Spanish) fluency is required.
  • Successful track record in project management, who is highly collaborative (i.e. curious, problem solver, planner, self-driven).
  • Solid experience in effective change management, including deployment of new products, processes, and/or systems.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including strong leadership and diplomacy, and the ability to maintain clear and insightful communication across a broad spectrum of leadership levels.
  • Consistent demonstration of a customer focused (internal and external) and results orientated work style.  A passionate, high energy leader who has the skills to work across business units and within all elements of Global R&D.
  • Strategic thinker who can understand and link long term business objectives with long term genetic development priorities.  Must be able to translate strategic objectives into quantitative based program development objectives.
  • Success in developing communication collateral materials that clearly articulates program objectives, priorities, and milestone-based objectives. 
  • Experience in financial modeling, multi-variate analysis, optimization, or forecasting.
  • Excellent communicator.  Outstanding oral and written skills, including delivering compelling presentations.
  • Travel is required (up to 60% domestic and international).
  • Valid driver license, valid passport, and eligibility for a company sponsored vehicle insurance.
