John S. Tamagni & Sons Farms
Salinas, California
“I grow organically because I have very few insect and disease problems. With my small acreage, it is better to manage the farm organically, especially since I already have the right processes in place.”
John has been growing berries for Driscoll’s since 2007. 12 acres of organic blueberries are planted on his Salinas ranch. He believes that the mild coastal climate allows blueberries to ripen slowly, resulting in outstanding size and flavor.
John plants many different varieties on his farm – on 12 acres he has no fewer than 12 varieties! Because some varieties are naturally well suited to the climate on the Central Coast, 70% of his crop now comes from three truly amazing blueberry varieties.
John’s grandfather immigrated from Switzerland in 1899, and his family have been farming in Salinas ever since – nearly 100 years. They have seen many changes during that time, but their passion for farming remains the same.
When John is not farming he likes to travel overseas. His favorite destinations include Central America, Europe and Asia.
