About the Opportunity

This position’s responsibilities include providing legal counsel, analyzing legal risk through legal research and dispute/claim analysis, leading contract structuring and negotiation, and directing, managing, and supporting legal counsel across North America, South America, Europe, China, and Australia. This is an expert generalist role, ideal for a strategic and business-minded attorney, experienced paralegal, or contracts professional with strong legal research, negotiation, and project leadership experience.

Responsibilities

• Provide solution focused legal guidance to a multitude of business groups at Driscoll’s including communicating complex ideas, anticipating potential objections, and persuading people at all levels to a different point of view.
• Contribute to the development of functional strategy and lead legal projects.
• Provide expert legal counsel in the following areas of law: commercial transactions, agriculture, customs, employment, finance, food safety, information technology, intellectual property, labelling, licensing, nursery, PACA, procurement, real estate, sales/marketing, supply chain, traceability, international trade/trade remedy, transportation, UCC, etc.
• Draft and negotiate a broad variety of contracts in accordance with legal policies and procedures.
• Evaluate and manage disputes, claims, and litigation.
• Collaborate with other members of Legal Affairs on cross-functional initiatives.
• Oversee, hire, evaluate, and support effective working relationships with domestic and international outside legal counsel to provide required expertise and support for transactional and legal matters.
• Ensure the security of Driscoll’s confidential and proprietary information.
• Represents Driscoll’s in an ethical and business-like manner in all interactions with growers, suppliers, customers and the business community at large.
• Mentor and learn from employees at all levels.
• Domestic and international travel required up to 10%.

Candidate Profile

• Bachelor’s required. JD preferred, however we are very interested in experienced paralegals and contracts professionals.
• 12+ years of experience for attorneys.
• 15+ years of experience for paralegals and contract professionals.
• Experience structuring, negotiating, and closing complex legal transactions.
• Legal research and regulatory analysis experience required.
• Litigation and dispute management and Intellectual property licensing experience required.
• Experience in Agribusiness strongly preferred.
• Ability to review, analyze and negotiate broad assortment of legal agreements.
• Outstanding legal research, oral, and written communication skills.
• Not required, Spanish is a plus.

Preferred (other) Qualifications

• Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills; ability to develop close working relationships and to work, collaborate, and finalize projects, contracts and transactions effectively across diverse groups, teams, and cultures.
• Prior experience as an attorney, paralegal, or contracts professional in a firm or corporate legal environment.
• Experience with Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. 
• Experience working in the agriculture industry and/or in a global organization.
• Spanish is a plus, but not required.
• California driver’s license and a valid passport with the ability to travel internationally without restrictions.

Compensation & Benefits

The following information is provided in good faith as a general description of the salary range and benefits for the position posted.  The actual compensation offered to the successful candidate is dependent upon experience, skills, education, work location, internal pay equity, and other objective job-related factors. 

Salary Range estimated for Attorney/Senior Legal Manager: $150,000.00 to $174,000.00 USD.
